
Last Sunday (17 July), the LNER Community Stadium in York played host to some top-quality girls’ rugby league action.
The under 14’s sides from Greetland All Rounders and Halton Farnworth Hornets took to were the first teams to take to the field.
Greetland All Rounders came out firing and put the pressure on Halton straight away.
Half-back Lill Seal was pivotal to the Greetland attack. Four tries and nine goals gave an impressive 34-point haul for Seal.
Teammate Madison Clegg also scored four tries, meanwhile Isabelle Murray and Charlotte Shaw added one score apiece in the 58-0 victory.
Halton tried hard but nothing went their way on the day, but they will they come back stronger for the experience.
The influential, Lill Seal was awarded the player of the match.
In the second match of the afternoon, it was a War of the Roses clash as Oulton Raidettes under 16’s took on Leigh Miner Rangers.
Despite the intense heat, it did not take anything away from the high quality of the clash.
40 players were involved in the fixture, which went to extra time after the sides were unable to be split at the full-time whistle.
Oultons try scorers were Ebony Stead, Cerys Gregory, Isabelle Brennan, Tarren Williamson and Harli Elbrough. Goals were added by Zabrina Williamson, who converted two and Isabelle Brennan.
Leigh’s points came from player of the match Berit Salihi (2), Libby Wall, Grace Ballard, Katie Palmer with scrum half Emma Knowles kicking 3 conversions.
The match went to extra time with the scores tied at 26-26. After 18 minutes of extra time action, Poppy Adams had an opportunity to win the cup for Yorkshire side, Oulton and she delivered as she converted a penalty.
Both teams will now be looking forward to the U16’s Cup which gets underway in September following the summer break.
The match officials also contributed to the day and deserve great credit, Feargus Brown, Megan Mills and David Wilson.
