Try Tag Rugby to launch in Wigan

Try Tag Rugby to launch in Wigan

After successfully launching its first two franchises last year in Bristol and Coventry & Warwickshire, Try Tag Rugby have announced that they will soon be launching in the Rugby League stronghold of Wigan.

Try Tag Rugby, the Rugby Football League's Tag Rugby League partner, is the UK delegate to the International Tag Federation (ITF) and currently operates in Bristol, Coventry & Warwickshire, London, Manchester, the Thames Valley and Yorkshire.

Tag Rugby League is a fun and exciting non-contact social sport suitable for adults; no previous rugby experience is necessary; it's a sport that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced players alike.

Try Tag Rugby will launch a mixed league in Wigan on Monday, May 20 at St Peter's Catholic High School (WN5 8NU).

Tag Rugby League is a very social sport and a great way to meet new people as well as a chance to meet up with existing friends.

There will be a weekly post-match social, where players come together to enjoy a drink with their team mates and opposition.

For those wanting to give it a try before signing up for the league, Try Tag Rugby will be holding Free Taster Sessions on the grass pitches at St Peter's Catholic High School on Monday 29th April and Monday 13th May, with both starting at 7pm.

Try Tag Rugby Wigan Operations Manager Dylan Barlow said: "It's exciting to be launching in Wigan this summer.

"Wigan is world renowned for its Rugby League team and its links to Rugby League. Try Tag Rugby started out in Australia as an off season training game for Rugby League players and is based on Rugby League, but without the contact. It's massive amongst Rugby League players and fans in Australia and we are sure Tag Rugby League will be very popular here.

"Tagging enables Tag Rugby League to keep the exciting game play of Rugby League, but by removing the contact it makes it a sport that can be enjoyed by all, no matter what age, gender or experience level. It’s just a great way to have fun, make plenty of new friends and improve your fitness.

"For current Rugby League players, its close similarities to Rugby League make it a great game to play in and around any other training.

"It's also a way for those who don't currently play Rugby League such as supporters, ex-players, players' partners, people that can't commit to training twice a week and playing on weekends to still get a rugby ball in their hands and have a run around."

Try Tag Rugby are also looking to recruit referees in the area. Refereeing Tag Rugby League is lots of fun and can be a great way to earn some extra money. All levels of refereeing experience are welcome, if you would like to get involved as a referee, please contact wigan@trytagrugby.com.

  • Registration for the taster sessions and league is now open for individuals, groups and teams.
  • If signing up for the league as an individual or group, Try Tag Rugby will put players into a team.
