England’s Caitlin Beevers and Rhiannion Marshall have both been named in the NRL.com team of the tournament for the Downer Rugby League World Cup 9s which took place this past weekend at Bankwest Stadium, Parramatta.
Craig Richards’ side beat Papua New Guinea in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon in their opening game of the tournament but fell to defeat against eventual finalists Australia and New Zealand.
Beevers – on her first trip Down Under - scored in England’s victory over PNG just one week after winning the Betfred Women’s Super League with Leeds Rhinos on her 18th birthday.
She said: “Unfortunately, we didn’t make the final which was our ultimate aim and we are disappointed not to have progressed further, but this has been an invaluable experience for the team and also me personally.”
Marshall – who also played in the Grand Final - finished as England Women’s top try-scorer from the Downer World Cup Nines thanks to her brace against Papua New Guinea on Friday afternoon.
She said: “It has been a truly amazing experience to walk out at Bankwest Stadium and it’s just another step for England Women’s Rugby League.”
Both Beevers and Marshall are set to travel to Papua New Guinea for the ground-breaking two-game test series next month.
