England’s George Williams scored his first try following his move Down Under as his Canberra Raiders side beat St George Illawarra Dragons 22-16.
Williams pulled out a trademark sidestep and sliced through the Dragons defence on just before half-time to open his try-scoring tally for the Raiders.
The former Wigan half-back also notched another try-assist which took him to eight for the season so far. Williams is 3rd in the try-assist rankings sitting behind only Cronulla Sharks’ Shaun Johnson and Sydney Roosters’ Luke Keary.
Ryan Sutton made a fourth consecutive appearance for the Raiders and impressed running for 141 metres; more than any other Canberra forward. Elliott Whitehead was also instrumental making two-line break assists.
Hooker Josh Hodgson was once again dominant in defence totalling 51 defensive efforts which was more than any other player for Ricky Stuart’s side.
Williams wasn’t the only Englishman to score this past weekend in the NRL as Herbie Farnworth crossed for the second consecutive week, but he couldn’t prevent his Brisbane Broncos side falling to defeat against New Zealand Warriors.
Thomas Burgess’ South Sydney Rabbitohs returned to winning ways with a 10-26 victory over Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Burgess made 143 metres from his 15 carries in another impressive display.
England prop-forward Luke Thompson was in attendance to watch his new Canterbury side fall to defeat but will be hopeful of debuting next weekend against Farnworth’s Brisbane.
The Raiders contingent host Melbourne Storm on Saturday while Burgess’ Rabbitohs welcome Wests Tigers.
