Official Report / Commentary

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats won for the first time in six visits to the KCOM Stadium to launch their Super 8s campaign with a 31-13 victory at Hull FC thanks to a final-quarter points spree.

Chris Chester’s visitors trailed 13-7 with full-back Max Jowitt in the sin bin midway through the second half.

But tries from Bill Tupou, Pauli Pauli and Tom Johnstone plus six Ryan Hampshire goals ensured Trinity followed up their recent record-breaking 72-10 home win over the Black and Whites with another success.

Scott Taylor had given Hull an early lead before Craig Huby levelled after 32 minutes from Kyle Wood's pass.

It was 7-7 at half-time after drop goals from Jacob Miller and Marc Sneyd and Jowitt was yellow-carded for throwing the ball away after Danny Houghton's 40/20 kick, with Jamie Shaul's try inflicting further punishment. Sneyd converted but Hampshire’s 60th-minute penalty cut the deficit before Wakefield roared to victory.

“Realistically, we know the top four is out of grasp,” said Wakefield coach Chris Chester. “But while it is still mathematically possible, we are going to work our hardest to try and get there.

“We showed some really good signs, especially in that second half, including one spell when we had 13 sets and completed 12.

“If we can bottle the start to the second half and start like that against St Helens on Thursday we are going to be a tough team to beat.”

Hull FC boss Lee Radford said: “We are massively disappointed with the second half in particular. There were so many layers stripped back on how we wanted to play with the football. It was scary.

“So, to play that way your percentages need to be really high, your errors need to be really low and you need field position and territory. We are desperate at the minute for some blokes to grab the game by the scruff of the neck."
