Official Report / Commentary

Castleford Tigers scored 18 second-half points without reply to claim a 24-6 victory at struggling Salford Red Devils and climb to third in Betfred Super League.

Jake Webster scored two tries for Daryl Powell’s side - who have lost just one of their last seven matches.

Castleford opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Greg Eden’s kick on the last tackle bounced kindly for Grant Millington and the ball was worked to the right edge via Quentin Laula-Togagae for Jake Webster to score a try which Paul McShane converted.

Salford got off the mark six minutes before half-time when winger Jake Bibby was quickest to react to a kick to the corner by Ed Chamberlain, launching himself full length to ground the ball before it rolled dead on the slippery surface. Chamberlain levelled the scores with a superb conversion off the touchline.

Castleford took control of the game with two converted tries in quick succession through Michael Shenton and Webster's second of the night from close range before Kieran Gill crossed over and McShane added the extras.

Salford coach Ian Watson said: "I thought it was a positive response from us on the back of the defeat at Hull KR last week. We did really well in the first half but Castleford did the same thing to us in the second half and I thought Paul McShane's kicking game was the difference for them.

"We are in a tough situation but it's a good opportunity for a lot of players to gain some Super League experience which will be good for us and them going forward."

Castleford coach Daryl Powell said: "It was a tough game and conditions dictated that a bit - they were awkward and slippery. Salford were really good today and defended aggressively and were tough to break down. They controlled the first half.

"We had to change our mentality for the second half and the game flipped. We changed our attitude and we will have to step up again in the next two weeks."
