Official Report / Commentary

A converted Ryan Hall try helped Leeds Rhinos edge an entertaining contest with Hull KR 20-18 at KCOM Craven Park.

The hosts opened up an eight-point lead thanks to the boot of Ryan Shaw and a 13th-minute touchdown from Robbie Mulhern, but Leeds fought their way back into the contest.

Joel Moon crossed in the 20th minute before Jamie Jones-Buchanan went over, both converted by Kallum Watkins.

However, the hosts had the final say before half-time as Mose Masoe touched down and Shaw enjoyed more success from the tee to give them a six-point advantage.

Rovers were unable to build on that momentum, though, as Masoe spent 10 minutes in the sin bin for a high tackle.

Leeds made the extra man count as Hall scored a converted try before Watkins wrapped up victory with another nerveless kick.

Rovers boss Tim Sheens said: "We made too many mistakes and not enough completed sets.

"We had too many turnovers which gave them seven tackle sets. Our completion rate was only 50 per cent in the second half and as boring as that is, you can’t win games when you don’t complete at a higher level.

"I’m not asking for 100 per cent, but we’re disappointed. We took too many poor options and we could have won the game had we taken the right options."

Leeds head coach Brian McDermott said: "We were really good in effort, and some parts of our defence were outstanding and some parts of our attack were OK to good.

"There is lots of improvement in us and we come away with a tight win instead of a close loss. Defence is huge part of the game and you can’t win without having a strong defence but we can’t keep nicking games by a couple of points.

"You don’t come to Hull KR on a Sunday afternoon when it’s not a TV game and expect an easy game.

"All things considered, I’d give this win a thumbs up. In terms of performance I’ll break it down and say it wasn’t as good."
