Year 8 schoolboy wins Rugby League fans' 'Try of the Week' accolade

... and a present from a Saint!

As if scoring the try of the match in the recent Year 8 Warners Champion Schools final wasn’t enough for young Lewis George, Rugby League fans have this week voted his eye-catching effort for Wade Deacon High School their Our League ‘Try of the Week’.

‘Try of the Week’ is the most popular piece of content on the RFL’s Our League app. An estimated 20,000 people saw the try and Lewis captured one third of the vote in an online poll.

All of which earned the Widnes youngster a guest appearance on this week's 'Try of the Week' programme and a very special tribute from his favourite Super League player - St Helens full-back Lachlan Coote.

In a surprise video message the popular Saint and Scotland international congratulated Lewis on his “awesome” try, thanked him 'for all his support' and gave him, via presenter Jamie Jones-Buchanan, a replica shirt signed by the St Helens squad. Jones-Buchanan himself told Lewis "I was amazed at your dancing feet".

Lewis said: "It's good that people are seeing how good the youth game is. We've been working on it in training. There was one marker and he shot out of the line, a few defenders were flat on their feet and I thought 'run at them'!"

Widnes Vikings fan Lewis scored the first try in Wade Deacon’s 36-8 Champion Schools defeat of Wigan’s St John Fisher and last year starred at Wembley Stadium when the same two schools met in the annual Challenge Cup Final curtain-raiser.
