Canberra suffer last-minute heartbreak

There was heartbreak this past weekend for Canberra Raiders and their English contingent as they were denied victory with the final play of the game following a simply breath-taking last-ditch defensive effort from New Zealand Warriors fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

The Raiders found themselves 31-10 in front heading into the final 30 minutes of the game, but a resurgent Warriors hit back with tries from Bayley Sironen, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Tuivasa-Sheck and Adam Pompey to snatch victory from Ricky Stuart’s men.

It had been an enjoyable afternoon for Canberra’s England Internationals up until the 50th minute with Ryan Sutton, George Williams and Elliott Whitehead all getting on the scoresheet, with Williams also notching a drop-goal just before the interval.

Sutton powered over for just his 2nd NRL try after 21 minutes and also made more tackles than any other player on the field with 51.

Whitehead’s effort was the pick of Canberra’s tries as the ball went wide thanks to the Bradford-born backrower with Jarrod Croker finding Jordan Rapana who in turn kicked the ball on for Whitehead to finish a scintillating Raiders move.

Hooker Josh Hodgson provided two try-assists, taking his tally to three for the season.

Elsewhere, Herbie Farnworth’s Brisbane Broncos earned their first victory under the stewardship of Kevin Walters with a 24-0 win over Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Saturday morning.

The English youngster provided a try-assist whilst also making three line breaks for the Broncos and running for a huge 269 metres, more than any other player on the field.

Tom Burgess’ South Sydney Rabbitohs put down a marker for the 2021 NRL season as they beat local rivals Sydney Roosters 26-16 on Friday. Burgess spent 47 minutes on the field, making 156 metres from 17 carries.

Finally, England Youth star Dominic Young made his NRL debut for Newcastle Knights albeit in a 20-24 defeat to Wests Tigers.
