Wigan Warriors will become the latest Betfred Super League club to host an Inclusion Fixture when they play Castleford Tigers at the DW Stadium this Friday (September 15).
Inclusion fixtures are an opportunity for clubs to showcase the development work they do both within their clubs and the wider community, where collectively they are strengthening foundations and making new connections with diverse groups and individuals.
Since 2022, the Warriors have fielded teams for Learning Disability Rugby League (LDRL), Physical Disability Rugby League (PDRL) and Wheelchair Rugby League as well as boasting a Women’s Super League Team and an impressive Girl’s Academy.
The club hosted a second ‘One Club Training Session’ at the start of August, which saw 12 groups – made up of one player from each team – take part in various stations focusing on passing, tag, wheelchair and strength and conditioning.
And on Friday, all teams will be celebrated as part of Wigan’s Festival of Inclusivity with lots of activity taking place in the Robin Park Arena Fan Village. The club’s Community Foundation coaches will be running Wheelchair taster sessions for all to take part in, subject to chairs being available.
Supporters will also be able to watch the Girls Academy and PDRL team’s train on the Astro pitches in preparation for matches this weekend and at half time of the First Team match, Wigan’s Women’s team will be parading the pitch alongside the Academy.
RFL Inclusion Lead, Ben Abberstein, says:
“We’re delighted to have the support of Wigan Warriors behind the Rugby League Together campaign. Wigan have powerfully demonstrated their commitment to inclusion through their ‘One Club’ training sessions that see all Warriors teams train together. Friday’s Festival of Inclusivity promises to be another fantastic day that will see these teams celebrated with plenty of ways for fans to get involved and support.”
Tickets for Friday night’s fixture against Castleford Tigers are available to purchase from the DW Stadium Ticket Office (open Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) or online HERE.
Supporters at all games are encouraged to report any discriminatory or abusive language to their nearest steward.
