Batley win in Newcastle as Oldham beat Halifax

Batley win in Newcastle as Oldham beat Halifax

Betfred Championship round-up

Bradford Bulls and Batley Bulldogs maintained their strong starts to the Betfred Championship campaign with victories over Whitehaven and Newcastle Thunder respectively.

Featherstone Rovers and Toulouse Olympique - the only two teams with 100 per cent records in the division - were not in action after their match was postponed due to quarantine regulations and the chasing pack took full advantage to close the gap on the league leaders.

A brace from prop Steve Crossley and further tries for Joe Brown, Brandon Pickersgill and Ebon Scurr secured Bradford's 30-22 victory to sit alongside Featherstone and Toulouse on six points in the table.

Andrew Bulman, Jessie Joe Parker, Jason Mossop and Aiden Roden crossed for Whitehaven.

Alister Leek's try double inspired Batley to a 28-16 win at Kingston Park, with Elliot Hall, Dale Morton and Tom Gilmore also scoring for the Bulldogs.

Kieran Gill's brace and Jake Shorrocks' try proved in vain for Newcastle after Batley's third win in four matches.

Jarrod Sammut kicked a last-gasp penalty to earn a 20-20 draw for London Broncos at Sheffield Eagles.

Izaac Farrell contributed 12 points alongside James Glover's early try to put Sheffield ahead, but Tuoyo Egodo and an Abbas Miski hat-trick put London in control.

Broncos were let down by the tee as Chris Hankinson only managed one conversion before Sheffield thought they had won it with Aaron Brown's 79th-minute try, only for Sammut to rescue an unlikely point for the visitors.

Widnes Vikings secured their first win triumph of the season, defeating Swinton Lions 46-10.

Steve Tryer finished with 18 points after a try and seven goals, with Deon Cross (2), Kenny Baker, Brad O'Neill, Ellis Robson, Shane Grady and Adam Lawton also scoring for Widnes.

Nico Rizzelli and Mike Butt touched down for Swinton, who are the only team yet to win in the Championship, and also had Rhodri Lloyd sin-binned late on.

York City Knights secured a 30-20 win at Dewsbury Rams thanks to Kieran Dixon's 14-point haul.

Ryan Atkins, Marcus Stock and Matty Marsh's double helped York secure successive league victories, while Matty Fleming, Andrew Gabriel and Aaron Hall crossed for the hosts.

Oldham edged to a 16-12 success against Halifax Panthers.

Tommy Brierley, Martin Reilly and Jack Croft touched down for Oldham, with Connor McGrath and James Woodburn-Hall also crossing the whitewash for Halifax.
