Canberra Raiders and their English quarter earned a second victory of the season albeit in dramatic fashion against Cronulla Sharks on Sunday morning.
Fortunately for the Raiders, Chad Townsend couldn’t kick a last-minute penalty goal to take the game to Golden Point Extra-Time.
Captain Josh Hodgson was impressive for the Raiders making more tackles than any other Canberra player with 41 whilst also providing the try-assist for Hudson Young’s effort just before half-time.
Speaking to fellow Englishman Elliott Whitehead on the Raiders website after the game, Hodgson said: “We knew it was going to be a little bit like that. We want to be better, particularly the second half, but we’ll take a win any way we can get them.
“It was a big occasion for the Sharks with it being [Wade] Graham’s 250th appearance so they were always going to come out flying.
“The first 40 was good, just the way we wanted to play and then we went a little bit away from it but we’re two from two and that’s what we want to do early try and get those wins on the board.”
Halfback George Williams took his assist tally to three for the season midway through the first half as provided the pass for Sebastian Kris’ score.
Forward duo Whitehead and Ryan Sutton also featured, with the latter running for almost 100 metres.
Elsewhere, Tom Burgess helped South Sydney Rabbitohs earn their first victory of the season as they overcame Manly Sea Eagles 12-26 at Lottoland. Burgess again topped the 100-metre mark from his 13 carries as the Rabbitohs climbed into the NRL Finals spots.
It was another defeat for Herbie Farnworth and Brisbane Broncos on Friday as they fell to a 28-16 defeat to Queensland rivals Gold Coast Titans.
Neither Bailey Hodgson or Dominic Young featured for Newcastle Knights in their 16-20 win over New Zealand Warriors while Luke Thompson missed Canterbury’s disappointing 0-28 loss to Penrith Panthers on Saturday.
