After the 2021 Season Launch show last night, watch out for a host of new faces and voices to Our League over the next few weeks as the Rugby League coverage keeps rolling.
Some of them will be very familiar to Rugby League fans – starting with the inimitable Wayne Godwin, who has become a legend in his own budgie-smugglers on Rugby AM since the end of his career as an all-action hooker, and will join the BBC’s Matt Newsum in commentary at the LNER Community Stadium in York tonight, when the City Knights face Hull FC in an intriguing pre-season fixture.
On Saturday, Sharon Shortle, a respected Rugby League voice through her work with BBC Radio York and the Super League Show, will commentate on Oldham’s match against Halifax Panthers at Bower Fold – joined by Steve McCormack, who has followed his successful coaching career from Salford to Scotland by taking a crucial role as Welfare and Development Manager at Rugby League Cares.
That will be followed by the Tommy Makinson Testimonial as St Helens take on Leigh Centurions at the Totally Wicked Stadium, with George Riley joined by Tommy’s former Saints team-mate Jon Wilkin – while Sam Hallas will make his debut alongside Mick Gledhill for the Bradford-Keighley derby which kicks things off at 2pm.
Then on Sunday, George will have another former St Helens and Great Britain star, Alan Hunte, alongside him for the AJ Bell Stadium clash between Salford Red Devils and Wigan Warriors – while across the Pennines, Matt Horton will be joined by the Huddersfield stalwart Eorl Crabtree for the Giants’ fixture against Leeds Rhinos.
And don’t forget, the serious business starts next weekend, with five Betfred Challenge Cup ties live and exclusive on Our League.
Nichola Spencer, the RFL’s Membership Manager, said: “We’ve never been so busy with Our League, and with so many games to show, we’re excited to have some new faces involved with our coverage – to join the regular commentators and summarisers who have helped us establish Our League over the last couple of years.
“Kyle Walker, Danika Priim, Gareth Walker and Clare Balding got us off to a great start with the 2021 Season Launch, and we’re delighted to be providing coverage of the first game at the LNER Community Stadium, which is free to season ticket holders of York and Hull FC, and available on pay per view to anyone else who wants to watch a match tonight.”
