Sam Tomkins shines as Liam Farrell hits 100 Wigan tries

Wigan Warriors sit atop the Betfred Super League table following their 28-10 victory over Leeds Rhinos on Sunday afternoon.

England back-rower Liam Farrell was pivotal in the Warriors win as he crossed for his 100th Wigan try as well as making 127 metres from 18 carries and a massive 46 tackles.

Fellow Englishman Dom Manfredi was also on the scoresheet following some clever Wigan hands. Zak Hardaker and Sam Powell both notched try-assists for Adrian Lam’s side while Joe Greenwood made his 100th Super League appearance.

Luke Gale managed to claim a try-assist but – alongside fellow England hopeful Harry Newman – couldn’t inspire his side to victory.

The performance of the weekend came from Catalans Dragons who hammered Wakefield Trinity 0-58 on Saturday afternoon with England full-back Sam Tomkins putting forward a stunning performance.

Tomkins had a hand in almost all of the Dragons’ ten tries finishing the game with a try-assist, two clean breaks and three offloads as well as a massive 141 metres from 15 carries.

Tom Davies and Matt Whitley – both of whom are listed as potential England Knights candidates – crossed for spectacular hat-tricks in the dominant performance.

St Helens edged past Castleford Tigers in a hard-fought 10-0 victory which saw just one try scored.

The game saw England hooker James Roby make his 500th career appearance with the Saints legend making a typical 45 tackles in the victory.

Tommy Makinson, Alex Walmsley and Jonny Lomax all clocked over 150 metres against a robust Tigers defence. James Graham featured again however, Mark Percival – returning from a week on the sidelines – left the field early due to injury.

Prop-forward Liam Watts was central to Castleford’s steely defence totalling 42 defensive efforts in his 250th Super League appearance. Adam Milner made his 250th career appearance in the defeat while Danny Richardson also played.

Warrington Wolves edged out Huddersfield Giants with England second-rower Ben Currie scoring his first try of the 2020 Super League season. Stefan Ratchford kicked three goals.

England and Warrington forward quarter – Chris Hill, Daryl Clark, Mike Cooper and Jack Hughes – all made in excess of 33 tackles in a tough display. Josh Charley was Wire’s second biggest metre-eater with 133.

Jermaine McGillvary was on the scoresheet for the Giants, crossing for his first try since the opening weekend of the season in February.
