Bateman cleared to take on PNG

John Bateman has been cleared to play in the fourth and final match of Great Britain’s tour in Papua New Guinea next Saturday.

The Canberra Raiders forward was put on report for a tackle on New Zealand’s Ken Maumalo in Saturday’s Second Test defeat in Christchurch.

Bateman pleaded guilty to a careless high tackle and the Match Review Panel for the series, chaired by Stevan Cole and including Braith Anasta and Michael Hodgson, ruled that the incident was a grade one offence - leading to the imposition of 50 demerit points which could lead to future suspensions applying to international matches only, but no suspension.

The Great Britain squad are currently in Brisbane and will fly into Port Moresby on Wednesday ahead of Saturday’s Test at the Oil Search Stadium – the first GB Test against Papua New Guinea since 1996, which will be preceded by the Second Women’s Test between England and the PNG Orchids.
