"We're going to enjoy every second" - Jack Owens

Jack Owens previews the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final.

With the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final on the horizon, Widnes Vikings star Jack Owens spoke exclusively to rugby-league.com to reflect on a 2019 full of ups and downs - as they aim to end the year on a high...

"It's exciting but strange at the same time. We don't know what to expect come the weekend. We had a meeting about yesterday's game today (Monday) and we've swept that under the carpet - all focus is on Saturday now.

"It's going to be a good weekend for us, especially after all the club's been through this year.

"We were waiting for that Leigh semi-final for a very long time and when it finally came round we just knew - we had a good feeling we were going to win.

"As good as Leigh are we just thought we were going to win. Now it's Wembley week - we're going to milk it for all it's worth and embrace it all.

"We didn't play our best in that first half of the semi, but we just defended like our lives depended on it - that's what we can do.

"It's a shame we've not shown that all season because after administration we were still hopeful of making the top five - that performance against Leigh showed what we can do as a team.

"We scored a very good try through Gells (Anthony Gelling), then I managed to go through off a set move which me and Danny Craven had been working on all week - then they scored through Adam Higson and it was a pretty nervous last six minutes.

"But we just said behind the sticks 'look, it's six minute's work - it's not hard, we play rugby for a living,' and everyone dug in.

"No matter what Leigh threw at us we were going to make sure we got to Wembley.

"I'm a homegrown lad and it'll be a proud moment, not just for me but for my mum and dad as well.

"My mates are going down watching me too. It's a big occasion for a lot of people

"One thing I've talked about a lot this year is what the fans did for us in administration. It's a massive week for them and I think there's nearly 5,000 people going down so it's a big occasion for all of them and I hope they enjoy it as much as we do.

"The thought of walking out at Wembley with a Widnes badge on my chest is a bit nuts!

"It's been 26 years since widnes have got to Wembley.

"It's not the Challenge Cup final, we know that, but whatever people think of this cup, we've taken it very seriously - as have Sheffield - and that's why we're going to Wembley this week."

"We're going to enjoy every second of Wembley week and we'll see what happens on Saturday."
