Betfred Championship round-up

Rochdale Hornets' relegation from the Betfred Championship was confirmed after they went down 50-26 at home to Batley Bulldogs.

Hornets led 14-12 after scoring tries through Kyle Shelford, Daley Willams and Lewis Sheridan but trailed 18-14 at the break and conceded 32 points in the second half.

Winger Wayne Reittie led the scoring spree for the Bulldogs with a hat-trick of tries on his 150th appearance for the club.

Rochdale's 22nd defeat of the season leaves them seven points behind Barrow Raiders with only four matches left of the season.

Barrow remain favourites to join Hornets in League One after going down 24-16 at home to York City Knights.

Matty Marsh scored a first-half hat-trick of tries to put York on their way to extending their unbeaten run to seven matches which keeps them second in the table, a point ahead of Toulouse Olympique, who had to come from behind to gain a 30-22 win at Halifax.

Fresh from their herculean effort against St Helens in the Coral Challenge Cup semi-finals, Halifax held the lead until Paterika Vaivai's 65th-minute try finally swung the momentum in favour of the Frenchmen.

Mark Kheirallah kicked a third conversion to put his side four points in front and added two late penalties to clinch a 16th win of the season.

Featherstone Rovers and Leigh Centurions both needed late drop goals to secure victories that maintained their play-off challenge.

Matty Ashton scored four tries for Swinton but still finished on the losing side as Ryan Brierley's one-pointer secured a 31-30 win at Leigh Sports Village, while Dewsbury Rams were undone 25-24, despite scoring five tries to four, by a drop goal from Featherstone's Dane Chisholm two minutes from time.

Leaders Toronto Wolfpack were also given a scare before extending their winning run to 17 games, coming from 18-4 down at half-time, to gain a 25-20 win over Bradford Bulls at Odsal.

The Bulls' 10th defeat of the season leaves them five points adrift of fifth place with time running out to claim a play-off place.

On Friday, half-back Anthony Thackeray scored two tries as Sheffield Eagles beat Widnes 30-10 in a dress rehearsal for the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup final at Wembley.
