Another first for Rugby League on BBC Radio Merseyside

Another first for Rugby League on BBC Radio Merseyside

Rugby League and BBC local radio broke new ground last week when two stars of the women’s game became the first female voices to be heard on a Radio Merseyside live match commentary.

St Helens players Jodie Cunningham and Faye Gaskin joined regular match commentator Alan Rooney at the St Helens versus Wakefield Trinity Coral Challenge Cup tie, during which they shared their own Rugby League experience with thousands of listeners.

BBC Radio Merseyside Rugby League presenter, Steve Roberts, said: “Faye and Jodie are regular guests on our weekly ‘Try Time’ programme, where they offer insightful and enthusiastic promotion of the Women’s Super League, and discuss the sport in general from a grass roots perspective. I always knew they would move seamlessly into match commentary.”

Both Faye and Jodie will be in action this Sunday (16 June) when Lancashire take on Yorkshire at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium in the second of this summer’s two Women’s Origin games. The match will be broadcast live on the Rugby Football League’s ‘Our League’ app, kick off 11.45am.

Faye and Jodie will expect to be in action the following weekend (Sunday 23 June) when St Helens host Wigan Warriors in the quarter-finals of the Coral Women ‘s Challenge Cup. Kick off at the Totally Wicked Stadium is 12 noon and the tie will also be broadcast live on Our League. The rest of the draw is as follows, with all fixtures taking place on Sunday 23 June.
