Halifax and Sheffield Eagles, the two entrants to the inaugural 1895 Cup with the most recent experience of winning at Wembley, will face each other in their first game in the new competition.
The Second Round draw for the Cup, which included the 12 English clubs in the Betfred Championship plus four League One clubs who won First Round ties at the weekend, was held in the clubhouse of the community club Featherstone Lions ARLFC this evening [Sunday], and conducted by RFL Vice-President Pat Crawshaw and former RFL President Kath Hetherington – in a double header of draws which also included the Second Round of the Coral Women’s Challenge Cup.
The Eagles are now coached by Mark Aston, who won the Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match when they stunned Wigan in the 1998 Challenge Cup Final.
Halifax enjoyed their second Wembley Cup Final win in 1987, when they beat St Helens in a thriller, and like Sheffield they are relishing the opportunity to return in the first final of the 1895 Cup – which will be played on Coral Challenge Cup Final day at Wembley Stadium, August 24.
Other all-Championship ties in the Second Round will see Batley, the first ever Challenge Cup winners in 1897, hosting Rochdale Hornets; Dewsbury, who were defeated by Wigan in the first Wembley final in 1929, at home to Swinton; Bradford Bulls travelling to Cumbria to face Barrow Raiders; and a heavyweight battle between two clubs who share 10 Challenge Cup wins, Widnes and Featherstone Rovers.
Workington Town and Newcastle Thunder were done no favours after their impressive First-Round wins, with tough trips to Leigh and York respectively.
And at least one team from Betfred League One is guaranteed to reach the quarter finals, after Oldham were drawn at home to Doncaster.
Neither of those clubs have ever played at Wembley – and the eight winners of these Second Round ties will be only two wins away from a dream appearance at the famous Stadium in the first 1895 Cup Final.
The Second Round ties will be played between May 31 and June 5, with details to be confirmed after next weekend’s Coral Challenge Cup quarter finals.
