In another first for Women’s Rugby League, Castleford Tigers will travel to face Déesses Catalanes on Easter Monday (April 22) and battle for the Inaugral HerRL Trophy.
As part of a double-header the fixture between Women’s Super League side Castleford and the French Championship side will be played ahead of the Betfred Super League fixture between Catalans Dragons and Castleford Tigers.
Coached by Cyril Torres, Déesses Catalanes are currently the top team in the French Championship and have a number of international players in their side including Ophelie Coll, Elisa Akpa and Leila Bessahli who all featured in October’s fixture against England Women.
The Déesses Catalanes are working hard to promote Women’s Rugby League in France and trained against England Women in Saint-Estève last year.
It is hoped the two sides will meet at least once a year with the HerRL Trophy defended every time the two clubs clash.
Speaking about the announcement, head coach Lindsay Anfield said, “Our upcoming game in Perpignan was always goings to be special but now that there is silverware on the line the girls will be more motivated than ever to make sure we come away with a win.
“It’s ground-breaking for the Women’s game to have an international double header. I think it’s important to push the boundaries of what can be achieved so organising a friendly game in France this year was firmly on my agenda for my team.
“We would like to say a massive thanks to Angela Powers for letting us use the HerRL name on the trophy. We would also like to say a huge thanks to the Catalans Dragons for working with us to turn this dream match from a dream into reality.”
