Wigan Warriors halfback Harry Smith proved to be influential as England Academy overcame the Australian Schoolboys 14-8 at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday.
The 18-year-old scored a try and kicked three goals for a 10-point haul, while his in-play kicking proved to be a handful for the Australian back line.
Speaking after the game he said: "It was a great experience.
"We knew it was going to be tough but I thought we did a really good job on them, especially in the first half."
England led 12-0 at the break thanks to tries from Smith and Harry Newman, before Smith's second-half penalty made it 14-0.
Though Stephen Crichton and Timanu Alexander scored for the visitors late on, England held out for the win.
"We just need to work on our completion rates," added Smith.
"We need to keep it going all game because Australia can hurt you from anywhere if you're not completing.
"Kicking that 40-20 was a big relief. I thought it was going to go straight out but thankfully it stayed in and it was a bit of a gamechanger in the end - it helped us get a bit of field position at a crucial time.
"That was my first crack at the Aussies. Before the game was a bit nerve-wracking but once you get into it, it's a really good experience and hopefully I can get many more under my belt.
"I'm from Widnes, I grew up playing for Halton Farnworth Hornets until i was 15, then moved to Wigan St Judes for a year and was picked up by the scholarship at Wigan - I'll be looking to push towards the first team next year hopefully.
