Robbie Mulhern didn’t quite believe that he was called up to the England Knights squad and is relishing the chance to play for the first-team against France on Wednesday.
“When I got the phone call from JP (Jamie Peacock) I didn’t have his number saved, so I thought someone was winding me up.
“If someone would have told me at the start of the season I would have been playing for England, I would have laughed at them.
“It’d be unreal. If I get that chance, brilliant, if not, I’d just like to be involved in the squad. If I get my chance I’d cap off a crazy year.”
The 23-year-old front rower has impressed for his side Hull KR in 2018 and received a substantial lift by his inclusion in the England setup and being so highly rated by England coach, Wayne Bennett, whom he described as “one of the best coaches in the world”.
“To know you’re in his thought process, it’s a massive confidence boost. Makes me want to kick on more and hopefully two or three years on I might have a nailed on starting spot in the side.”

Mulhern trained with the full squad, and admitted he was a little star-struck at the prospect of training with NRL stars, like James Graham.
“I was a bit dumbstruck, I was like a sponge listening to what they were saying. To be around proven NRL players and England stars, it’s class for me.”
The former Leeds Rhinos man also waxed lyrical about the quality in the England Knights squad, featuring Super League stars like Liam Sutcliffe and Jamie Shaul.
“There are some real talented players in there. It shows that pathway is there. Hopefully, I’ll try and impress” said Mulhern.
