Betfred League 1 Round 1 wrap-up

York City Knights and Bradford Bulls kicked off the Betfred League 1 season in style, with a thrilling 20-22 away win played out in front of over 4,000 fans at Bootham Crescent.

The Bulls lead 16-8 after tries from Ashley Gibson, Elliot Minichella and Steve Crossley but Joe Batchelor’s first saw the hosts close to 16-12.

Joe Keyes’ penalty push Bradford back into a six-point lead but Batchleor bagged his second and Connor Robinson converted to make it 18-18 with 65 minutes played.

Robinson then kicked a drop goal to put York a point ahead before Keyes kicked two from the tee to edge the Bulls a point back in front.

Another one-pointer from Robinson once again tied the scores up but Keyes’ mammoth penalty from the halfway line right on the hooter, sealed a pulsating win for John Kear’s Bradford.

There was another dramatic finish in Wrexham, as Jymel Coleman’s 79th minute penalty saw London Skolars rescue a point away at North Wales Crusaders.

Hakim Miloudi scored four tries whilst Jason Tali, Russ Spiers and Liam Harris all bagged two as Doncaster romped to a massive 70-10 win at home to Coventry Bears.

Five goals from Paul Crook and a try from Matthew Wilkinson saw recently-relegated Oldham secure a 14-0 win at Whitehaven.

Fellow Cumbrians Workington Town were also defeated as they went down to a 34-44 loss at Keighley Cougars whilst Hunslet recorded a 28-14 away win at Hemel Stags.

Newcastle Thunder's 700-mile round-trip to Llanelli to face West Wales Raiders was postponed.
