Wigan hold off Castleford in Betfred Super League

Wigan hold off Castleford in Betfred Super League

Wigan Warriors managed to hold off a second half comeback from Castleford Tigers to return to winning ways in the Betfred Super League.

Back-rower Liam Farrell crossed twice for the Warriors while Jai Field also found himself on the scoresheet in another impressive performance at fullback. Ethan Havard and Zak Hardaker would also cross for Wigan.

Jake Mamo, Jake Trueman, George Griffin and Greg Eden were the scorers for Castleford, but they couldn’t prevent Lee Radford’s side falling to a fifth loss of the Betfred Super League season.

A Gareth O’Brien penalty goal gave Castleford an early lead but tries from Hardaker and Farrell gave Wigan the advantage. Eden’s try saw the deficit narrowed to four points heading into half-time but centre Mahe Fonua was sent to the sin-bin.

Havard, Field and another Farrell effort within the first 14 minutes of the second half looked to have all-but sealed victory for Matt Peet’s men.

However, the Tigers wouldn’t go down without a fight as they hit back through Griffin, Trueman and Mamo within 11 minutes of each other. But the comeback was halted when Bradley Martin was sent from the field in the closing stages.

Hardaker would add two late penalty goals to further the hosts margin of victory.
