Betfred Championship Preview

A feast of Betfred Championship action is coming up on Sunday with six 3pm kick offs.

Arguably the tie of the round sees York City Knights, bolstered by the arrival on loan of Jamie Ellis, Tyla Hepi and Jake Sweeting, host high-flying Batley Bulldogs at the LNER Community Stadium.

Batley sit fourth in the table having lost just twice in the league this year, only losing out to London and Featherstone in 2021, a run of form which has outlined the quality of Craig Lingard's side, who are hoping to draw on the spirit which has seen them reach so many Championship highs over the past decade.

In opposition, ambitious York have stuttered somewhat so far this season, losing five times in nine games.

The Knights' off-season recruitment saw the arrivals of the likes of Adam Cuthbertson and Ben Jones-Bishop amongst others, but their home form has left a little to be desired so far.

However they are in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup Final which may give the squad some focus this week as they look to hit form at the right time.

The weekend's other eye-catching fixture sees a battle between two mid-table outfits with play-off ambitions as Widnes Vikings play host to Sheffield Eagles.

The Eagles ended a run of six games without a win - including two draws - last time out as they beat Oldham 32-28 away from home and they will be hoping that is the springboard for a return to the form which saw them carve out early-season wins over York and Bradford.

But Widnes have reason to feel some optimism after a slow start to 2021. They pushed Featherstone close in the 1895 Cup semi-final, while they scored over 40 points in wins over Whitehaven and Oldham, before falling short 24-22 against upwardly-mobile London last weekend.

Elsewhere in Sunday's Betfred Championship action, Dewsbury Rams welcome Featherstone Rovers to the Tetley's Stadium, Whitehaven travel to face London, Newcastle Thunder are at home to Oldham, and Halifax Panthers face a trip to Swinton Lions.
