After some careful planning, Elland leading light James “Hooter” Redmond was able to bring together a team of Elland Masters. He was rewarded with 17 players for their first game as fellow Calderdale team, the experienced Boothtown Masters, provided the opposition.
It was a cold but sunny day with a bitter easterly wind blowing across the pitch at the Greetland Community Centre as the new Masters took to the pitch.
The relatively young team, Derek Lund being the only Gold shorter, started enthusiastically but found the modified rules of Masters a steep learning curve.
Boothtown were exemplary in helping their new Masters mates get to grips with the Masters Rugby League.
The game was played in quarters to allow the Elland team to regroup and to learn more about playing Masters. A few players also needed the breaks to get their breath back!
The day was a great success with six further players registering having seen Masters for the first time!
James was enthusiastic after the game, saying: "the lads are buzzing! They cannot wait to play again. It took some time to get used to what was expected of us but we have loved it!"
Elland are already looking for future games and are planning to make at least one festival whilst targeting the National Festival at Blackpool in September!
