Home & Away: NRL round 19

Home & Away: NRL round 19

THEIR games were just 90 minutes apart but Brits Joe Greenwood and Joe Wardle endured widely varying conditions and fortunes in the NRL at the weekend.

Former St Helens star Greenwood, 24, scored a try for Gold Coast in torrential rain as the Titans scored a stunning 30-10 win at CBUS Super Stadium on Saturday night.

Earlier, Huddersfield graduate Wardle, 25, was cast as the villain for Newcastle when he kicked the ball straight into the arms of Brisbane speedster James Roberts in bright sunshine at a crucial stage of the Knights’ 34-22 defeat.

Wardle was caught with the ball on the last tackle and hurried a kick, which was intercepted by the Bronco before he raced 80 metres to score after the lowly Knights led at halftime.

“The second half was going well until we came up with the play we came up with,” said the Knights’ former St Helens coach, Nathan Brown.

“There are many things we could have done. We did the worst one. We found Jimmy the Jet.

“Hodko (Trent Hodkinson) could have kicked it. Joe could have passed it. Joe could have got tackled.

“The worst play was to kick it into Jimmy The Jet.”

Greenwood’s 60th minute try was as good as the Wardle kick was bad, the ball kept alive through six pairs of hands including a sublime flick pass from half Tyrone Roberts.

But the English highlight of the weekend undoubtedly belonged to Canberra back rower Elliott Whitehead, the scorer of a golden point try that secured a gripping win over St George Illawarra.

Blake Austin’s raking 40-20 laid the platform for the 83rd minute touchdown, former Catalans import Dave Taylor laying the ball up perfectly for Whitehead to dot down near the posts for a desperately needed Green Machine victory..

The Burgess boys endured a disappointing trip to Cairns on Sunday, with North Queensland making light of Johnathan Thurston’s absence to down South Sydney 23-10.
