Kingstone Press League 1 Round 15 Previews

In Round 14, University of Gloucestershire All Golds travelled to Canada to face league leaders Toronto Wolfpack and were defeated 62-10.

Coach Lee Greenwood said, “It was a really good experience, we made sure it was. We chose to go on Thursday rather than Friday, we wanted to spend as much time out there as we could and make the most of it, as it’s not something we’ve done before.

“In the game itself I thought we did our best despite all the odds stacked against us.”

Looking ahead to the game against Doncaster, Greenwood continued, “We always knew these last three games of the regular season would be difficult for us and we always knew we’d be losing a few players because of the Student World Cup.

“I thought at Barrow we did our best and the same last week against Toronto so all we can ask is that we do the same on Sunday.

“Doncaster have won by big scores in their last two games and they’ll be hoping to do that again this week.

“We played them in the Challenge Cup this year and gave them a game for 60 minutes before we caved in a little bit.

“Hopefully we’ll get a decent start and be competitive for as much of the game as possible.”

All Golds are currently 11th in the Kingstone Press League 1 table but could potentially move in to the top eight this weekend with a win against Doncaster RLFC and depending on other results.

Greenwood said, “I’ve probably got more chance of winning the lottery than us managing to get that final eighth spot but to even be in the mix by a very remote, mathematical possibility this weekend is a testament to the lads this year.

“There’s so many things that would have to happen for us to move in to that eighth spot so being realistic we’re going to be in the bottom eight but we’ll go out there to try and get a win on Sunday against Doncaster.”

In Round 14, Doncaster secured a huge 70-12 win against South Wales Ironmen and have the potential to move further up the Kingstone Press League 1 table with a win against University of Gloucestershire All Golds this weekend.

In action across the rest of Kingstone Press League 1 are Toronto Wolfpack, who take on Hemel Stags at the Lamport Stadium in Canada on Saturday (4.30pm).

In an all Cumbrian fixture, third placed Whitehaven RLFC welcome second-placed Barrow Raiders as they battle for second position. The teams are currently only separated by points difference.

Keighley Cougars will be hoping for a win against Oxford RLFC to keep hold of their top eight spot but North Wales Crusaders and Hunslet RLFC could ruin their chances as they take on Coventry Bears and Newcastle Thunder respectively.

London Skolars welcome South Wales Ironmen and York City Knights come head to head with Workington Town.

All fixtures unless stated kick off on Sunday, July 16 (3.00pm).
