Sean O'Loughlin set to sign on at Wigan

England captain Sean O'Loughlin is poised to sign a new contract with Wigan Warriors after banishing any prospect of retirement in the near future.

O'Loughlin, who turns 35 in November, is the only senior Wigan player not signed up for 2018 but, as he prepares to make his 400th appearance for the club in Thursday's Betfred Super League match with Warrington Wolves, says he is ready to put pen to paper.

"I've spoken to the club a few times," O'Loughlin said. "They want me to be here and I want to be here, it's probably just sorting a few minor things out but I've no intentions of going anywhere.

"This is where I've grown up playing and I'd love to finish my career here.

"I don't feel I'm ready to retire yet. I still love training and I still love playing. I still enjoy coming to the club every day and trying to get better. I know I've got a few years left and feel like I'm still playing at a good level."

O'Loughlin, who made his debut for his home-town club against Hull FC at the DW Stadium in April 2002, will become only the 11th Wigan player to reach the milestone, joining Bill Francis in 10th place on the list of most appearances.

He added: "Someone asked me if I thought I'd get to 500 and I said 'no chance'. I feel I've got a few years left in me though.

"I'd hate to retire and feel like I can still play but I'd always want to be of value to the team. As long as I'm still offering something on the pitch which I think I am, and as long as blokes like Waney (coach Shaun Wane) want me to play, I'll keep on playing."

O'Loughlin, who was appointed captain in 2006, following in the footsteps of his brother-in-law Andy Farrell, has been promised a place on the club's coaching staff when he eventually hangs up his boots.

He led Wigan to World Club Challenge success in February at the third time of asking when they beat Cronulla 22-6 and victory on Thursday would keep alive their hopes of completing the league and cup double for the second time in five years.
