Two of Betfred Super League’s in-form teams go head-to-head at the AJ Bell Stadium on Thursday night as Salford Red Devils aim to make their first semi-final since 1998 – a game in which Sheffield Eagles beat them and famously went on to defeat Wigan in the final.

Salford have been made to work to make it to this stage of the competition after narrowly overcoming Toronto Wolfpack and Hull Kingston Rovers in the previous rounds. Ian Watson will be well aware of the challenge in front of him but also knows his team could go all the way in this competition after establishing themselves as a top four side in Super League.

One player the Red Devils will be keeping a close eye on will be Wakefield and former Salford winger, Mason Caton-Brown who scored a hat-trick against his old club during Round 17’s corresponding fixture a couple of weeks ago. Caton-Brown's third try three minutes from the end proved the decisive score in a frenetic finish after Salford had fought back to lead 24-22 having trailed 16-0. Wakefield ran out 34-24 winners that day.

Wakefield coach Chris Chester has a decent track record in the Cup after guiding Hull Kingston Rovers to the final in 2015 and Trinity to the semi-final last year. Since arriving at the Yorkshire club, he steered them to the Super League Super 8s in his first year and now they sit in fifth position on 22 points. Confidence is definitely high amongst his players with Ben Jones-Bishop, Reece Lyne, Liam Finn and Caton-Brown leading the attacking line.
