Cramlington Rockets Community have broken fresh ground by linking up with Northumbria University.

The partnership will see volunteers from the local university working alongside staff from the Rockets Community team in schools across Northumberland.

Northumbria Sport Volunteer is Northumbria University’s Sport Student Development programme that’s all about doing something for people in our community.

It provides opportunities for students to gain work experience and training and development opportunities while making a difference in the local community.

Jack Meggit was the first volunteer to join the team this term, shadowing Community Manager, Steve Beaty as he worked in the a number of schools across Northumberland.

Jack, who is from Keighley and studying Sport Development with Coaching also plays for the university’s successful rugby league side and was able to pass on his knowledge of the game through a number of different fun sessions.

“We have been really impressed with Jack’s enthusiasm and how he has applied himself,” said Beaty.

“He was very good at taking what he is learning at university and using it in the classroom or on the rugby field and we are hoping to see more of him in the New Year.”

Meggit said: “I have really enjoyed seeing what Rockets Community do and getting involved.”

“Everyone in the schools especially the kids have been really welcoming and I really appreciate the opportunity to use the skills I have learnt at Uni in a real life setting.”
