The regional games were introduced in 2015 as an alternative to the Regional Championships, where all regions used to come together on one day to compete for the Championships. Ultimately the Regional structure form the first step on the ladder to representing England Universities. The 6 regions recognised for the regional games are:
- North West
- North East
- South West
- South East
To qualify for the regional teams, players must be studying for a University within that region, it is not based on where you are from.
The Regional Games will take place before Christmas in the academic year and the games will be as follows:
- North West Vs Midlands
- North East Vs Yorkshire
- South East Vs South West
The RFL offers a comprehensive representative pathway for talented male and female students to be recognised and represent their country in a Rugby League World Cup or be selected to tour with the Men's Great British and Irish Academic Lions.
The England Women's programme is officially recognised on the pathway for full England selection.
The University Rugby League Origin game was introduced in 2016 to give players another opportunity to gain representative honours in the University game as well as another opportunity to put themselves in the ‘shop window’ for a place in the England Universities Squad.
The Origin game is made up of a North and South team, the North and South Squads come from the Regional squads. The North is made up from the North West, North East and Yorkshire, where the South is made up from the Midlands, South East and South West. Players are eligible for the squads based on where they are studying and not on where they are from.
In the inaugural Origin game, the North were triumphant coming out 44-28 winners.
The Student World Cup will take place in Sydney, Australia in 2017 as part of the Festival of World Cups.
