Official Report / Commentary

Tom Lineham's second try proved crucial as Warrington Wolves secured their place in the Betfred Super League Grand Final courtesy of a pulsating 18-13 victory over St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

The winger raced over with six minutes remaining to ensure the Wolves stunned the League Leaders' Shield winners on home soil.

A tense opening 40 minutes saw Saints lead 3-2 at half-time after penalties from Tyrone Roberts and Danny Richardson, who also kicked a drop goal.

The game came to life at the start of the second half when Warrington let the kick off bounce out and after more poor defending, Luke Douglas took advantage.

Jack Hughes responded for the Wolves by waltzing over before another Richardson penalty extended Saints' lead to five points.

That was soon wiped out as Lineham slid over in the corner, with Roberts making it 12-11 with the conversion, yet Richardson kicked two more drop goals in the space of as many minutes after missing a penalty.

But Warrington had the final say in the 74th minute when Lineham beat several defenders to cross.

Warrington coach Steve Price said: “I’m super proud. We spoke all week about needing all 17 players to contribute their best game of the season and they certainly did that.

“To keep St Helens to one try on their own pitch was a super effort, the way we kept turning them away from our line was superb.

“They’ve been the number one offensive team and the most consistent team all season and to come here and produce a performance like that makes me so happy.

“We need a performance like that next week, we need to raise the bar again.”

St Helens coach Justin Holbrook said: “We’ve worked hard all year to give ourselves the best chance and we didn’t play well enough.

“I want to give Warrington credit, we knew it was always going to be a hard game. I’m obviously proud of the effort but didn’t play well enough and that’s tough to take. We fell just short.

“As the scoreline shows, there wasn’t much in it but we made some poor decisions defensively and Warrington took their chances.”
