Official Report / Commentary

Wigan Warriors forced rivals St Helens to put the champagne on ice after condemning them to a second successive home defeat in the Betfred Super League Super 8s.

Victory for table-topping Saints would have secured the League Leaders’ Shield with four games to spare but the Warriors turned on the style to win 30-10 and secure their place in the semi-finals with a third win from three Super 8s fixtures.

Wigan were dealt a blow when full-back Sam Tomkins pulled out with a leg injury in the warm-up, but his deputy Morgan Escare stepped in superbly to play a key role in the impressive win.

Escare provided the link to get Dan Sarginson over and the centre touched down again on the counter-attack, following a break by Greenwood, before Bateman increased Wigan’s lead with a solo try four minutes before the break.

Saints pulled a try back in amazing fashion in the last play of the half when Tom Makinson plucked the ball from the air following Danny Richardson’s speculative kick to the corner and planted the ball on the line, but it took Wigan just 70 seconds of the second half to restore their 14-point lead as they ran the ball on the last tackle and winger Tom Davies reached out of a two-man tackle to score his side’s fourth try.

Still Saints came back and gave themselves renewed hope when Makinson crossed for his second try but the killer blow was provided by Oliver Gildart, who showed a nice turn of pace to round Ben Barba, before Sean O’Loughlin piled on the misery for the home side to go over for Wigan’s sixth try, with George Williams kicking his third goal.

St Helens coach Justin Holbrook said: “It was definitely not good enough, that’s obvious. We had some chances but we weren’t good enough to take them.

“At some stage hopefully we’ll wrap it up. We’re still sitting in a good spot but we want to make sure we play better. If we don’t, we won’t beat anyone. But you don’t lose your ability to play. We got beat convincingly tonight and we’ll accept that and move on.”

Wigan coach Shaun Wane said: “They threw down the gauntlet, saying they wanted the league leaders and a 3-0 whitewash.

“They will get the leaders' shield and they deserve it, they are a very good team, no question, that’s what makes is so sweet. We put a game plan together and it worked. I’m happy with the way we’re playing and were going to get players back.”
