Official Report / Commentary

Hull KR secured their place in Super League for 2019 with a comfortable 30-0 win over relegated Widnes at KCOM Craven Park.

Rovers went into the final match of the Super 8s needing to win by 14 points to pip Toronto to third place in the Qualifiers and, with acting captain Danny McGuire leading the way, they had the game sewn up by half-time, when they led 20-0.

There was no way back for the visitors when Rovers created an overlap for Junior Vaivai to go in for their fourth try after 57 minutes and Craig Hall added another nine minutes later.

It means Toronto will be at home to London Broncos in next Sunday’s Million Pound Game to determine the 12th and final place in Super League for 2019, with the Rugby Football League confirming both clubs are eligible for promotion.

Victory provided a timely pick-me-up for ailing Rovers captain Shaun Lunt, who remains hospitalised with an infection, while a sixth defeat in seven matches meant a disappointing end for Widnes duo Chris Houston and Aaron Heremaia as they entered retirement after the final whistle.

Hull KR coach Tim Sheens said: “Now we know what the budget will be and who’s off contract, we need to start talking to players.

“It was a good, emphatic win, although it still had my heart going with 15 minutes to go because we were only 16 points in front when you considered the points difference.

“We knew we had won the game and we also knew that meant at worst a home game in the Million Pound Game – but we didn’t want a repeat of that."

Widnes head coach head coach Francis Cummins said: “I think the plans (for next year) have probably started already. I’m sure I’ll finally get to know.

"You can never be that clinical where you can work with people and be in situations we’ve been in for the last 12 months without having an affinity with the club.

“There’s some memories that I will take away. We’ve been accused of not caring but, if you stood in a changing room full of men all crying last week, I don’t really want to repeat that. Those sort of experiences bond you with people. I’m a coach and I want to coach but I understand the situation.”
