Official Report / Commentary

Josh Charnley took his try tally to six in four games to move Wigan Warriors joint top of First Utility Super League alongside Hull FC with a 7-0 win at Widnes Vikings.

The Sale-bound winger broke the deadlock after a scoreless first half as the depleted Warriors made it five wins in a row.

WIgan, without nine regulars, were held until Charnley went over in the 48th minute for his 16th try of the campaign - and the only touchdown of a hard-fought clash.

Charnley also saved a try with a desperate tackle on Chris Dean as Widnes attempted to hit back.

Matty Smith converted Charnley's try and added a trademark drop goal to secure a crucial two points for Wigan, who are now 10 points ahead of fifth-placed St Helens.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane said: "Given the circumstances it was the most satisfying win of the season.

"I was really impressed tonight, the best team won and we had the guts and desire.

"We are not playing well and our attack is miles off where it can be but we have a real dogged spirit and never-say-die attitude.

"Widnes were at full strength on a pitch that suited them.

"We were down to the bare bones and we had a couple of players out there who shouldn't have played."

Widnes boss Denis Betts felt his side had been wasteful, saying: "If we had taken the chances we created we would have won.

"We were over the line enough times to win two games. It was Keystone Cops stuff. We dropped the ball by trying to play.

"We defended tough but Matty Smith pulled them round the field. It's hard not to have admiration for Wigan who came here with a beaten up side.

"It's hard to take because we were just about to put the ball down over the line several times and didn't manage it.

"Chris Dean made a fabulous 60-metre run and was just about to score the best try of his life and lost the ball."
