Official Report / Commentary

A new Betfred Super League attendance record was set at the Nou Camp in Barcelona as a powerful second-half display saw Catalans beat Wigan 33-16 in front of a crowd of 31,555.

The previous biggest gate for a regular Super League game was 25,004 for a Wigan versus St Helens derby in 2005 and the Dragons took this game to the capital of Catalonia to raise their profile.

It followed their historic Challenge Cup final over Warrington at Wembley last August which led to the Dragons being invited to play a home fixture at the Nou Camp by Barcelona FC.

McNamara's men held a slender 8-6 lead at the break after Michael McIlorum and Liam Marshall traded scores, but they ran amok in the second half as David Mead (2), Samisoni Langi and Sam Kasiano touched down.

Victory ended Catalans' 10-match losing streak against the Warriors.

Catalans coach Steve McNamara said: "I'm ecstatic because was a big occasion for our club and for rugby league. To come here to a coliseum and play like that; it was a very gladitorial game. We lost Greg Bird to a bicep injury early on but we defended so well and I just think it was a superb advert for the game. I couldn't get the players off the field at the end.”

Wigan coach Adrian Lam said: "We just looked flat and tired today and I’m very disappointed. I didn’t see it coming because we trained well all week and prepared well. That’s probably the worst we’ve played all year and I don't think the occasion got to the players. We've been one of the great clubs on the big occasions down the years, but we just looked flat and fatigued at times."
