England half-back George Williams was pivotal in Canberra Raiders’ 32-20 victory in Week One of the NRL Finals as they overcame a spirited Cronulla Sharks side.
The Raiders looked set to head into the break trailing the Sharks, however an exceptional play from Williams saw him intercept the ball on his own 20 metre line and outpace the chasing Cronulla defenders to score.
Williams would add a second to his tally for the evening in the second half as he powered his way over on the back of some clever play from half-back partner Jack Wighton. The former Wigan man also notched another try-assist in the win, taking him to 13 for the season.
Fellow Englishman Elliott Whitehead also got his name on the scoresheet as he latched onto a low kick in the second half as the Raiders put distance between themselves and the Sharks.
John Bateman also featured in what will be his last game at the GIO Stadium, but Ryan Sutton and Josh Hodgson both missed the game through injury.
The NRL Finals system means that the Raiders have progressed to the Elimination Finals and will face a repeat of the 2019 Grand Final as they battle Sydney Roosters. The losers will exit while the winners move on to face Melbourne Storm in the Semi-Finals.
England international Tom Burgess will also feature in next weekend’s Elimination Finals after his South Sydney Rabbitohs beat Newcastle Knights 46-20 on Sunday morning.
Burgess made an impressive 167 metres from his 16 carries against the Knights; the second highest of any Rabbitohs forward.
South Sydney will now face Parramatta Eels in the Elimination Finals on Saturday 10 October.
