Betfred Women's Super League Preview | May 26

The Betfred Women’s Super League returns this weekend after a break for the Challenge Cup. Here is a look at some of the key fixtures taking place this weekend.

Defending Super League champions, Leeds Rhinos will welcome St Helens to Headingley as part of a double header with the Men’s team. The game will be shown live on Sky Sports.

Leeds kicked off the 2023 live on Sky when they hosted the York Valkyrie. The Rhinos were unable to defeat York, however, bounced back in emphatic style the following week with a 80-0 win over Huddersfield Giants.

Leeds finished top of their Challenge Cup group with three wins from three matches.

St Helens head to Leeds having played one Betfred Women’s Super League match but have impressed during their Challenge Cup campaign with three wins.

Leah Burke has been a prolific scorer in 2023 both for club and country. Burke scored four tries during the Mid-Season International and has since continued that excellent scoring form.

On Sunday, York Valkyrie host Warrington Wolves in a fixture which will be shown live on Our League.

York Valkyrie currently sit top of the Betfred Women’s Super League. Tara Jane Stanley played a key role in their opening round success at Headingley. The full-back scored a try and turned provider for numerous.

Their second league match saw them defeat St Helens 26-6. Tamzin Renouf scored a brace during the victory.

In the Challenge Cup, the Valkyrie scored 220 points in just three matches, meanwhile in defence they only conceded four points.

Since their last Super League outing, York have lost Hollie-Mae Dodd who has joined NRLW side Canberra Raiders.

Warrington Wolves travel to the LNER Community Stadium in search of their first win in the top flight.

The Wolves were promoted last season and started their 2023 season with a strong 22-22 draw with Wigan Warriors.

Warrington proved to be prolific scorers with 136 points scored in their opening two games against Castleford and London. They suffered a 38-4 defeat to St Helens in their final group game.

Elsewhere in the league, Huddersfield Giants face Wigan Warriors.

The Giants lost to Leeds in their opening league fixture. During their cup campaign, Huddersfield defeated Bradford Bulls and Oulton Raidettes.

Wigan sit above Huddersfield in the table after drawing their opening game against Warrington.

In the Challenge Cup they won all three matches. The Warriors defeated Cardiff and Featherstone away, before beating Salford 60-0 at Robin Park.

In Group Two, Salford will face Leigh Leopards. Salford won their opening game 20-8, meanwhile Leigh Leopards drew their first league match against Bradford.

The Bradford Bulls will face Barrow in the other Group Two fixture.

Bradford conceded a late score which was converted for a draw by Leigh.

Barrow had a good 2022 season and suffered an opening round defeat to the impressive Featherstone Rovers.

In the Women’s South division, Thurrock T-Birds are set to make history as they will play their first match in the league. They will be facing the Army at Thurrock Rugby Club on Saturday afternoon.
