Girls RL Finals Day Wrap-up

Girls RL Finals Day Wrap-up

The curtain came down on a record-breaking Girls RL season on Saturday (October 8) as Featherstone Rovers’ Millennium Stadium played host to three finals.

As excitement builds towards a Rugby League World Cup that will see more eyes on the Women’s game than ever before, the teams brought a memorable 2022 season to an end – a season that saw a 50% increase in girls registered with community clubs compared to 2019.

Over 2400 girls participated this season, and that number looks set to grow further in 2023 with new clubs already expressing an interest.

The U13’s Cup Final got us underway, as Shaw Cross’ strong defensive display saw them defeat Birkenshaw Bluedogs 16-8 to be crowned champions.

The U14’s Premier Division Grand Final followed, with Greetland All Rounders claiming victory. Despite finishing second to Shaw Cross in the league table, they were able to wrap up an already-successful season in style as they added to their Yorkshire Cup and War of the Roses victories from earlier in the year.

Standout player Lil Seal was once again to the fore as they won 20-6, bagging a hat-trick of tries and kicking two conversions. England and St Helens star Jodie Cunningham was clearly impressed, and named Lil as Player of the Match.

Oulton Raidettes claimed the spoils in the U16’s National Cup Final, defeating old foes Leigh Miners 28-18. It was Leigh who were fastest out of the blocks though, racing in to an early 8-0 lead.

Once they shrugged off their own slow start, Oulton grew into the game and had too much for their opponents, with full back Ebony Stead leading the way as she collected the Player of the Match award.

The day was a huge success with over 500 spectators in the ground, giving the 2022 Girls RL season the finale it deserved.
