Betfred League One Preview | Preliminary Final

Betfred League One Preview | Preliminary Final

Swinton Lions have already booked their place in the Betfred League One Play-Off Final, but will it be Doncaster or Rochdale Hornets who will join them in the final on Sunday October 2? Here is a look at the match on Sunday.

Doncaster have played two away matches so far in the play-offs. The Dons travelled to face North Wales Crusaders in the Qualifying Final. A strong first half performance saw Doncaster take a 20-0 lead at half-time before seeing off the North Wales in the second half.

Doncaster then had an opportunity to reach the play-off final last weekend when they travelled to Swinton, however they were unable to and fell short during the 32-12 defeat.

Doncaster ended the season in fourth position with 15 wins from their 20 matches. Richard Horne’s side scored 720 points in attack, meanwhile defensively they conceded 420 points.

The Dons have defeated Rochdale on all four of their home meetings.

Jason Tali has a good record against the Hornets, and he will be hoping to continue his good run. Tali has scored six tries in his last four matches against Rochdale. Tali has scored 99 tries in 133 appearances for Doncaster since joining the club in 2016.

Rochdale will be looking to win their first away match at Doncaster since April 3, 2011, when they beat the Dons 24-8 in the Championship One.

After finishing fifth in the table Rochdale have played in two knockout matches during the play-offs.

The Hornets hosted Oldham in the Elimination Final with Rochdale coming out on top 38-24.

Then last weekend, they travelled to Colwyn Bay to face the North Wales Crusaders. Rochdale surprised the higher ranked side with a 36-20 win which was shown live on The Sportsman.

Gary Thornton’s side will be looking to win their third knockout game in a row which would then see them face Swinton next weekend at Heywood Park.
