John Bateman makes return

England International John Bateman made his return to the field this past weekend with his first appearance of the 2020 season finishing in a 12-14 victory for Canberra Raiders against North Queensland Cowboys.

Bateman had been sidelined since last year’s NRL Grand Final through a shoulder injury but returned to make more metres – with 158 – than any other Raider in Saturday’s victory.

Fellow Englishman George Williams has showed no signs of slowing down after making a big impact during his maiden NRL season and once again found himself on the scoresheet. The former Wigan half-back has now scored three tries and claimed eight try-assists.

Elliott Whitehead and Ryan Sutton were also in action for the Raiders both contributing over 100 metres in attack and 72 defensive efforts between them.

South Sydney Rabbitohs moved into the top eight of the NRL ladder with a 24-32 win against St George Illawarra Dragons. Thomas Burgess put in another dominant display racking up 188 metres, with 93 coming post-contact.

Luke Thompson’s struggling Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs were once again edged out against Parramatta Eels, 16-18, on Sunday. Thompson has now made four consecutive appearances at loose forward since making the move Down Under.

English back Herbie Farnworth – who has just signed a new two-year deal with Brisbane Broncos – couldn’t prevent his side falling a 26-36 defeat at the hands of Cronulla Sharks. Farnworth made more metres than any other Broncos back and has featured in 11 of Brisbane’s 12 NRL fixtures this season.

England’s all-time top try-scorer Ryan Hall returned to the Sydney Roosters side in their 18-12 victory over Gold Coast Titans this past weekend. Trent Robinson’s men now sit 4th in the NRL ladder behind Parramatta Eels, Melbourne Storm and Penrith Panthers.

Hall will be looking to maintain his place in the Roosters squad for their trip to Wollongong to battle St Goerge Illawarra Dragons on Thursday.

Burgess’ South Sydney Rabbitohs face Farnworth’s Brisbane Broncos on Friday in an eagerly anticipated grudge match between the two sides. Thompson’s Bulldogs face Melbourne Storm while the English Raiders contingent face a tough test against NRL leaders Penrith on Saturday.
