For the second weekend running, Huddersfield beat Wakefield to move to within a point of Super League's top eight with a 25-22 win over Trinity.
After knocking Chris Chester's side out of the Challenge Cup, Chris Thorman's side picked up the valuable two points at Newcastle United's St James' Park.
Tries from Aaron Murphy, Adam O'Brien and Jake Mamo gave Huddersfield an 18-0 lead before Matty Ashurst got Wakefield on the scoreboard with Danny Brough's drop goal giving the Giants a 19-6 lead at the break.
Ben Jones-Bishop scored the first try of the second half to reduce Wakefield's deficit to 19-12, but Darnell McIntosh's try in the left hand corner restored Huddersfield's 13-point advantage with half an hour to play.
A thrilling finale was set up with Jones-Bishop's second try of the game and Reece Lyne's try with eight minutes remaining left Trinity three points adrift, but Huddersfield held on for their third successive win in all competitions.
Huddersfield interim coach Chris Thorman was delighted to win in the city where he grew up.
"It’s a nice feeling,” he said. “I was born a mile down the road and for any Geordie to come here, in whatever sport, and win in this sporting cathedral is pretty special.
"With all the injuries we picked up, I think we’ve done as well as we could have expected. I’ve given five debuts to young academy products which will stand the club in good stead going forward."
Wakefield coach Chris Chester admits his side got what they deserved. "I don’t think we deserved anything from the game." Chester said.
“We just didn’t want to do the tough stuff in the first 30 minutes. It was probably the worst I’ve seen us play in that 30 minutes.
“We probably got out-enthused by a young, energetic Huddersfield team and we need to look at the reasons.”
