Hull Kingston Rovers have bolstered their options for 2017 by signing Jordan Abdull on a season long loan from Hull FC.
Abdull, who was once on the books at the Robins as a junior, makes the move back across the city to link up with Tim Sheens’ squad and has already joined his new teammates for pre-season training at the Lightstream Stadium.
A stand-off or loose forward by trade, the 20-year-old is a young pivot with Super League experience under his belt at Hull and he has also featured in the Kingstone Press Championship whilst on loan at Featherstone.
He said: “I know my way around the club already and I’m looking to have a good season here at Rovers, hopefully playing week in and week out.
“I haven’t been able to do that for the last few years but I’m looking forward to showing people what I can do here. I’ve had to take a bit of back step and let the other people I’ve been playing with organise the team, but hopefully I can now be one of the vocal players and have people respond to me.
“I’m a Hull lad so I know about the rivalry between the two clubs. I’ve played for both teams at academy level and it was a bit strange when the chance to come here came up, but I think the two clubs have different agendas for next year.
“It might have been a bit different last season but Rovers are trying to get back into Super League now and I want to play my part in that.”
Head coach Tim Sheens said: “Along with Jamie Ellis, Jordan gives us another half back with Super League experience and I’m keen to work with both players and help them improve.
“We’re looking at playing Matty Marsh at full back with Ben Cockayne playing there and on the wing. The squad is starting to take shape and the spine of the team is looking strong with Shaun Lunt at hooker as well.
“We’ve got cover for all of those positions and we’ll be looking to give some of the younger players a run when we can. They need that experience so we’ll rotate them into the team throughout the year when we have the opportunity."
The club yesterday announced the signing of highly rated Australian centre Andrew Heffernan from Penrith Panthers ahead of the 2017 season.
The exciting 21-year-old was tipped for the top whilst coming through the junior ranks at Canberra Raiders, but has found NRL opportunities hard to come by in a star-studded backline since joining the Panthers and will now head to the Lightstream Stadium in search of regular game time.
A creative talent with ball in hand or off the boot, Heffernan is a versatile playmaker who can also play in the halves or at full back, but is expected to feature more regularly at centre for the Robins after being identified by head coach Tim Sheens.
Standing at 6ft and weighing around 15 stone, Heffernan has the abilities to add considerable strike power to the Rovers side and was a stand-out performer Down Under at Under-20s level and in the Intrust Super Premiership, the reserve grade competition to the NRL.
Heffernan, who will join his new teammates for pre-season training shortly, said: “I’m really excited about having the opportunity to play for such a proud club with a rich history.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead of us in 2017 and can’t wait to get over there and start training with the squad.”
