Rugby League Masters – the show goes on in the North-East

While Newcastle waits another 12 months to host the first match of RLWC2021, this year’s Rugby League Masters North-East Festival went ahead as planned on what would have been the opening day of the tournament – Saturday 23 October.

The festival attracted eight teams – Arlecdon (Whitehaven), Barrow, Carlisle, Haresfinch (St Helens), Leigh East, Leyland, North East Masters and West Bowling (Bradford) – plus individual Masters players from as far afield as St Albans in Hertfordshire.

Altogether more than 100 players, aged 35 to 79, defied the weather at Jarrovians RFC, some of whom enjoying their first experience of Masters Rugby League. The ‘Master of Day Award’ went to Leyland’s Carl Rollins, for whom the festival weekend became his stag do. ‘Team of Festival’ went to West Bowling, who have recently started their Masters journey and were playing their very first Masters festival.

Organisers gave a special ‘thank you’ to the four referees – Paul Field, (Siddal) Martin Flynn (Club Masters), Tom Harrison (Blackpool) and Terry Mellor (Boothtown) – and to administrators Anne Field and Catherine Flynn.
