Warriors Foundation ‘thrilled’ by Touch Rugby League festival success

Wigan Warriors Foundation have hailed last weekend’s Touch RL festival a resounding success.

Touch Rugby League’s exciting new Foundation Series moved to Wigan on 28 August, when the Warriors Foundation hosted talented teams representing the Foundations at Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves – all of them taking the opportunity to show off their skills at the Wigan St Cuthbert’s club. And it was the hosts who emerged victorious in the second of four Foundation Series events, the Warriors Foundation's mens and women's side winning all of their games.

Patrick Mcloughlin, Men's Health Engagement Officer at Wigan Warriors Foundation, says: "We are thrilled with the outcome from Saturday’s festival and are already looking forward to future events.

"With this new initiative from the RFL we have been able to enhance our Touch Rugby League offer, in partnership with Wigan Council, and support Wigan Warriors fans in developing their understanding of the game and leading healthier lifestyles. We’ve also created another pathway for people to represent Wigan Warriors.

"A key person who has supported this project is Steve Melling, who has been involved with Touch RL for over thirty years. He’s connected our club with the 2021 England Touch National Touch Series champions, the Wigan Touch Warriors, helping to drive and promote Rugby League as a whole.”

Touch RL is a minimal contact version of Rugby League, where defenders make tackles by simply touching the ball, clothing or body of their opponent. The game offers incredible experiences for players of all ages and abilities, and anybody wanting to take up the game can simply email ashleigh.seddon@rfl.co.uk to find their nearest club.

Touch RL is part of an RFL social Rugby League offer which also includes Masters RL, Try Tag Rugby and X-League.

The next round in the Foundation Series is scheduled for Saturday 25 September at Leeds, where foundations from Newcastle and York are expected to make their bow alongside Hull FC, Hull KR, Leeds, Warrington and Wigan.
