Betfred Super League round-up

St Helens missed the chance to return to the top of the Betfred Super League after slipping to a first home defeat of the season against Warrington Wolves.

The defending champions were tryless in a 6-2 defeat in which England second rower Ben Currie scored the only try of an error-strewn match as Wolves secured a fourth win in a row over Saints.

“I didn't think we started well. The first opportunity with the ball we looked out of sorts for some reason. I think we beat ourselves,” said St Helens coach Kristian Woolf.

Oliver Gildart scored two tries on his return from injury but Wigan still crashed to their second consecutive defeat as Hull KR made it three wins in succession with an 18-8 victory.

Ben Crooks and Ryan Hall put the visitors 12-0 up just past the hour only for Gildart's double to get the home side back in it.

But Adam Quinlan's try five minutes from time secured the Robin a first win at Wigan since 2009 as Warriors squandered the opportunity to take advantage of Saints' slip-up the previous night.

“It was a good effort, a real backs-to-the-wall effort. They showed plenty of character,” said Hull KR coach Tony Smith.

"I'm not sure many teams come to Wigan and keep them to nil at half-time."

Twelve-man Salford Red Devils claimed their second win of the season at the expense of their former coach Ian Watson, with half-back Chris Atkin's 66th-minute drop goal sealing a 9-8 victory over Huddersfield Giants.

The Red Devils played most of the match with 12 men following the dismissal of second rower James Greenwood for a high tackle on Giants hooker Adam O'Brien.

Andy Ackers scored their only try, with Dec Patton's penalty and Atkin's 68th-minute kick edged Salford ahead after Aiden Sezer's penalty and Ricky Leutele's try had briefly levelled things up.

Castleford Tigers coach Daryl Powell is praying Gareth O'Brien will be fit for next month's Betfred Challenge Cup final against St Helens at Wembley after he hobbled out of Wednesday's 18-12 win over Wakefield Trinity.

The former Warrington, Salford and Toronto half-back fell awkwardly on his knee just before half-time and made his way to the dressing room on crutches.

"I'm praying that he's all right and he can get back out there as quickly as possible," said Powell.

Castleford ended their four-match losing run to extend their sequence of wins over their near neighbours to 15.

George Griffin, Jordan Turner, Michael Shenton and Peter Mata'utia all scored tries for Cas with Jacob Miller replying with two touchdowns for Wakefield, who lost centre Bill Tupou for the rest of the season with a ruptured patella

Bottom side Leigh Centurions crashed to an 11th straight defeat after going down 64-22 to Hull FC.

Andre Savelio scored a hat-trick and winger Adam Swift also touched down twice as Brett Hodgson's side ran in 12 tries.
