Southern Conference League Play-Offs set to begin

Southern Conference League Play-Offs set to begin

Following the drama of last Saturday’s Coral Challenge Cup Final, community clubs from England’s midlands and south, and south Wales, will share the rugby league spotlight this weekend.

The Southern Conference League play-off series begins on Saturday (31 August), featuring clubs from across southern England and the Welsh valleys. Wests Warriors (from Acton) play Swindon St George, London Chargers take on Gloucester’s All Golds, and Valley Cougars (Nelson, South Wales) play Bedford Tigers, while Torfaen Tigers and Hammersmith Hills Hoists complete the quarter-final line up.

The RFL’s competition manager for the community game, David Raybould, says: “14 clubs have played 73 games over the summer in this new fourth tier competition which has seen more than 500 players take the opportunity to test themselves at a higher level. Now we are down to the last eight with a semi-final spot at stake.”

Southern Conference play-off semi-finals will take place on Saturday 7 September, with Aldershot’s Army Rugby Stadium hosting the Grand Final on Saturday 14 September.

In addition to the SCL play offs this Sunday (1 September) sees the semi-finals of the Harry Jepson Trophy. Mansfield-based Midland’s champions Sherwood Wolf Hunt take on South West champions Devon Sharks from Bovey Tracey, who last week overcame Somerset Vikings in a semi-final eliminator, while East region champions Brentwood Eels host London premiers Wests Warriors A.

David Raybould adds: “The Harry Jepson Trophy is in its 23rd year and this year the competition has been as intense and exciting as I can remember. A number of new clubs won their regional leagues in 2019 and three of them will be vying to make the final for the first time. Only Wests Warriors have made the final before.”

The final will be held at Hemel Stags on Sunday 8 September, 2.30pm kick off.
