Official Report / Commentary

Toronto Wolfpack made a winning start to their Super 8s Qualifiers campaign but they were made to work hard for the points by part-timers Halifax.

The Wolfpack needed a try from Andrew Dixon four minutes from the end to finally see off their hosts 14-0 at the Shay to edge closer to a potential place in Betfred Super League for 2019.

The Canadian side finished eight points clear of their rivals at the end of the Betfred Championship season but Halifax provided a fair indication of the size of their task if they are to gain promotion.

Toronto led 6-0 at half-time thanks to Andy Ackers' converted try and Gareth O'Brien knocked over a penalty to give the visitors breathing space before Dixon made sure of the result.

The Wolfpack had to do it the hard way after both wingers Liam Kay and Matty Russell went off injured inside the first 23 minutes.

Head coach Paul Rowley said: “It was a blow losing two wingers and they are not any two wingers, they are probably our most consistent performers. It really affected our ruck speed and our cutting edge as well.

“I’m really disappointed for Liam, it looks like it could be season over, but Matty will come back strong.”

Halifax coach Richard Marshall said: “There wasn’t a lot between the two teams. We made it really difficult for them.

“Execution let us down today. We had plenty of opportunities, we had good, strong field position at key times in the game but we came up a bit short. I thought we were a bit edgy and a bit nervous.”
