Official Report / Commentary

Kallum Watkins and Tom Briscoe scored their first tries of the season to ensure a happy homecoming for Betfred Super League champions Leeds Rhinos in a thrilling encounter with Hull FC.

Both sides had two tries disallowed as the Rhinos edged to a 20-16 victory on their first appearance at a partially-reconstructed Headingley since September.

Leeds led 20-6 after an hour, thanks to a pair of tries apiece from Watkins and Briscoe, but were forced to withstand a tremendous fightback before securing a 14th successive home win over Hull stretching back to September 2007.

Lacking five first-choice players through injury or suspension, Hull had threequarter Jack Logan making his first appearance for almost two years, gave a debut to 20-year-old back rower Jordan Lane and a first start to Zimbabwe-born prop Masi Matongo.

Dean Hadley touched down in the first half for Hull to trail 10-6 at the break and despite tries from Jordan Abdull and Fetuli Talanoa to move the visitors to within four points with 12 minutes remaining, Leeds managed to hold on.

Hull head coach Lee Radford said: "I’m devastated with the loss but really pleased with the effort and endeavour. They were fine margins and unfortunately we just fell short.

"We showed them the semi-final from last season to illustrate how quick they get out of the blocks but we just didn’t have the answer for it. We did well to be only 10-0 down.

"We chased it and went down swinging so I’m pleased with that."

Leeds head coach Brian McDermott said: "After the time off, I wasn’t quite sure what we would be like but I thought we were good value for the win.

"It was a good contest. Even though Hull lacked some strike payers, they challenged us. Ultimately, our defence got us the win and I didn’t think we were too far off in attack either."
